Patina by James Maddox

Patina by James Maddox is a creative textile development studio exploring the world through material. We use embroidery, print exploration, surface design, and material experimentation as ways of looking closely, at nature, culture, movement, and ourselves. Inspired by patterns found in the world around us, from Turing patterns to the organic forms of landscapes and living systems, our work moves between fine art and haute couture. We believe materials can communicate things that words cannot, and that making is a way of understanding. At Patina, we explore, manipulate, and transform materials to discover new ways of expressing what we see, what we feel, and how we understand the world.

Patina is proof over time. It is the evidence that something has existed within a space, that it has been touched, weathered, changed, and shaped through the forces around it. We see Patina across landscapes, architecture, objects, and the natural world, layers accumulating, surfaces transforming, and traces of what came before remaining visible in what exists now. It reminds us that time is not separate from a place, but something that continuously shapes it.

Patina is also a way of thinking about history, particularly the layers of encounter, displacement, adaptation, and power that shape land and culture. A landscape can hold many histories at once, what was there before, what was imposed upon it, what survived, and what emerged from their interaction. Like a Turing pattern, these forces act upon one another, creating variation and complexity through their coexistence. We believe these layers should not always be concealed or polished away. They are evidence of a living process, a record of time, space, and everything that has passed through it.
